The Holly and the Oak King – The brothers who do battle over the light and dark halves of the year. The Holly King reigns over the dark and the Oak over the light. Some see this to be from Calen Mai to Calen Gaeaf, other traditions from Alban Hefin to Alban Arthan. It’s interesting to note that in our tradition, The Stewart Tradition, we see the Celtic tree lunations of Oak and Holly flanking the summer solstice as if Oak offers the doorway to 'other' and the Holly King's rule of the waning year.
